If only it was so easy to go to moon's land!!
This morning, at 6:30, I was watching the live telecast of "Chandrayaana 1", 1st phase of India's little steps towards the moon. After the launch, the director said, "We've been working on this project for 4 years and now our baby is on its way to the moon"... that triggered the thought.
Moon has always fascinated us all, right from our childhood
Moon has been our favorite maama... our Chandamaama, our possession
Mothers used to invariably show him to kids while feeding them dinner... (once upon a time)
He was also part of that wonderful dream land
Part of almost all lullabies I can remember...
Hez been a part of filmy songs too, an inseperable one at that. Be it little ones singing or hero praising heroine.
Today morning, Chand became more than a maama and a simile to compare with ur beloved's face. He became the pride of the country. We have taken the first step towards saying a very close 'Hi' to him... This time from about 100 KMs away, but in another 7-10 years, we will probably be on the moon... The PSLV carried the baby safely through its first phase of journey, now the baby is on its own, moving slowly towards his chanda maama. An achievement which will remain in the pages of history. A moment of glory for Indian scientists, their troubles and toils yeilding the best results. In fact the vehicle is carrying an India flag which will be planted on the lunar surface... the feat which cost us over 380 crores...
No doubt its a wonderful acheivement, but as I sat listening to the reports on TV, the chanda maama slowly turned into something else... He is a property, an opportunity no one wants to loose. We are still looking at him as a possession... Now the question is, who does he belong to? US, Russia, Europe, China, Japan or India? Sounds sad doesnt it? But supposedly, our maamu has been hiding a lot from us... Is there water out there? What are all the minerals on lunar surface? The most important seems to be the presense of one Helium3, which could be the answer to the energy crisis we are facing here, on Mother Earth. It is a non radioactive isotope of helium and is very very rare on earth. Its an ideal fuel, non polluting and clean. There are strategies being brought up to transport Helium3 back to earth.
I quote the following -
- "The primary objective of Indian Space Research Organization's first lunar probe called Chandrayaan-I, is to map the Moon's surface for the helium-3 mineral and also to explore feasible ways to "exploit" it".
- "Each year three space shuttle missions could bring enough fuel for all human beings across the world"
- "Every space power is trying to develop launch vehicles and spacecraft to have early access to the abundant natural resources on the Moon"
So what next?
LOC's drawn on the Lunar surface?
Human colonies?
Fights over what area of moon belongs to whom?
Final good bye to Mother earth some day?
Seems like too much of a "dooralochane", but then just 40 yrs ago if you told someone he could see a cricket match live, he would have probaly reacted the same way...!!!
I cant help but remember what Agent Smith said in the movie "Matrix" -
